It was still raining outside. Heavily. This was coupled with an unpleasantly cold wind that constantly changed its direction. We all stood under the canopy of the Poseidon for a while before we said goodbye to one another. Then everyone opened their umbrellas, and Strobelsohn, Tatyana, Henrik, and Ms. Hailu set off home.

I was heading out after them.

“Well then… Bye,” I said to Alex.

“See you tomorrow.” He put his hands in the pockets of his jacket and leaned against the wall. Only now did I notice that he hadn’t brought an umbrella.

I looked at him.

“I’ll wait until the rain lets up,” he answered my silent question.

“All night? It’s not going to stop anytime soon.” I hesitated. “Admittedly, my umbrella isn’t very big. But if you want, I’ll walk you to your car.”

“There’s no need.”

“Oh, come on,” I said. “Don’t be silly.”

He exhaled audibly, bounced up, and joined me.

We started moving. The rain pelted down on us from all sides. Cold gusts off the Alster swept mist into our faces. I shivered.

The first steps were unruly. Although I held the umbrella as high as possible, Alex constantly bumped his head against it.

It wouldn’t work like that.

I stopped. “Would you please be so kind?” I held out the umbrella to him.

Alex nodded. “Yes, of course.” He grabbed the handle, and I hooked myself to him, trying to get hit as little as possible by the thick drops.

We continued on our way. Slowly, but steadily.

The wind was terrible. Stealthily, I pressed closer to Alex. He didn’t seem to notice. Good thing.

“That was a nice evening,” I hurried to say, not wanting to let an awkward silence arise in the first place.

“It was,” he agreed with me. “It’s important to have semi-private meetings as a team.”

“My sentiments exactly. And Ms. Hailu is a good fit for us.”

“When she’s done with her training, you’ll have to use your psychologist voodoo to convince Bolsen that she should join our team permanently.”

I laughed. “It’s not voodoo, but of course I’ll try.”

We kept walking.

“Did you notice?” Alex inquired.

“Notice what?”

“Well, Strobelsohn. He’s got the hots for our fancy BND agent.”

I snorted. “You can’t deny that, although he’s trying hard not to show it.”

“Sure, he’s holding back. He’s married. And when the case is over, she returns to Russia. But a little flirting like that… my God, it won’t hurt anyone.”

“Bullshit,” I said. “You know very well that often it doesn’t stop with flirtation.”

“All too well, unfortunately.” His mouth tightened. “My previous marriage failed because of it. At first it starts out harmlessly, you think nothing of it. And then, suddenly… you’re standing in your bedroom doorway and…” He broke off.

Uh-oh, I thought to myself, and said, “Maybe you hadn’t done enough for the relationship.”

A bitter laugh. “Vanessa’s opinion, for sure. I could never please her, no matter how hard I tried. It was always too little, not good enough.”

“Been there, done that,” I admitted. “Unfortunately.”

He gave me a quick look. “Really?”

“I didn’t move from Wiesbaden back to Hamburg for fun.
